Achilles Tendinitis (Achilles Tendonitis)
At SA Running Injury Clinic, Achilles Tendinitis is the most common presenting Achilles Injury. In Achilles Tendonitis, the achilles becomes inflamed. This is combined with the tendon thickening and swelling. Achilles Tendonitis progresses and gets worse over time, that's why it's important to treat it as soon as it presents itself.
Stiffness at the back of the foot, particularly in the morning, is a common sign. The stiffness generally improves with exercise while the body is warm but returns once the body cools. In the early stages, cells work to control inflammation, making the condition easier to treat with a quicker recovery. If untreated for more than 6 months, it could develop into Achilles Tendinosis (see below), requiring 6-12 months for recovery.
Achilles Tendinosis/Tendonopathy

Achilles Tendinopathy or Achilles Tendinosis is an evolved stage of chronic Achilles Tendinitis that is not characterised by inflammation. People that have this condition have a tendon that has micro tear breakdown,

We sometimes deal with a more complicated injury called Retrocalcaneal Bursitis. This condition refers to inflammation within the fluid-filled sac between the heel bone and the Achilles tendon.
