Achilles Tendinitis (Achilles Tendonitis)
At SA Running Injury Clinic, Achilles Tendinitis is the most common presenting Achilles Injury. In Achilles Tendonitis, the achilles becomes inflamed. This is combined with the tendon thickening and swelling. Achilles Tendonitis progresses and gets worse over time, that's why it's important to treat it as soon as it presents itself.
The condition often shows up as stiffness at the back of the foot, especially upon waking. While exercise can alleviate the stiffness when the body is warm, it usually returns after cooling down. Early on, inflammation-controlling cells are present at the site, making treatment straightforward with quick recovery. If ignored for over 6 months, it can progress to Achilles Tendinosis (see below), which may take 6-12 months to heal.
Achilles Tendinosis/Tendonopathy
We frequently encounter athletes at SA Running Injury Clinic who have been dealing with an Achilles Tendon injury for more than half a year. At this later stage, significant changes in tendon composition occur, complicating the treatment process.
Achilles Tendinopathy or Achilles Tendinosis is an evolved stage of chronic Achilles Tendinitis that is not characterised by inflammation. People that have this condition have a tendon that has micro tear breakdown, thickening and scarring. Typically at this stage there is no warmth or redness but the site is still painful to the touch. Retrocalcaneal Bursitis
We occasionally see a more difficult injury called Retrocalcaneal Bursitis. It refers to an inflammation within the lubricating fluid-like sac that lies between the heel bone and the Achilles tendon. It is highly likely that there is the presence of a protruding bony bump on the outside-top border of the back of the heel. This bony prominence is known as a Haglund's deformity.
