Ankle Sprains Thorngate
What can Cause an Ankle Sprain?
- Did you misjudge a step and twist your ankle while walking or running?
- Have you landed on another person’s foot while playing basketball, netball, football, or soccer?
- Was there a popping or cracking sound?
- Is your ankle now stiff from swelling and bruising, causing discomfort when you stand or walk?
Ankle sprains are a frequent occurrence at SA Running Injury Clinic .. we treat them regularly.
Typically, as stated above, ankle sprains occur when a runner or walker misjudges a step or lands on an uneven surface. In sports, it happens due to sudden direction changes or landing on another competitor’s foot.
You might initially struggle with walking or standing, requiring strapping, crutches, or a walking boot. In more severe cases, fractures can occur. Unfortunately, spraining your ankle once can increase the chance of future sprains by 40 – 70%. This may also lead to persistent ankle pain and stiffness, referred to as Sinus Tarsi Syndrome.
