Shin Splints Treatment Myrtle Bank
Shin Splints Pain (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
- Do you feel a sharp pain on the inner part of your shin?
- Does it worsen during and/or after a run or sport?
- Is there an ache the morning after or when you cool down?
- Is it tender to touch at the site of the inside shin?
Shin pain Adelaide ranks among the top 5 injuries we encounter at the SA Running Injury Clinic. It is especially prevalent in runners and footballers.
Recent research points to the pulling of muscles at their attachment to the shin bone as the cause, resulting in inflammation at the muscle and bone junction.
The inflammation is caused by:
- Poor foot posture – excessive pronation (rolling inward) results in greater muscle pull against the shin, while excessive supination (rigid foot type) exerts more force on the shin bone
- Running – especially on hard surfaces (e.g., asphalt roads) or pre-season on hardened grounds
- Sudden increase in running intensity or duration following a period of minimal training
Shin pain can be a serious problem for you and can put you months behind in your training. It’s a nasty condition and one that needs to be treated fast once it presents or ideally prevented in the first place.
Many of our patients mention that after running a few kilometres or reaching half time, they can't continue. This is a significant problem that will disrupt your training plans if not addressed early.
