Shin Splints Treatment Glenunga
Shin Splints Pain (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
- Are you experiencing sharp pain along the inside of your shin?
- Does it intensify while running or playing sports?
- Is there an ache the morning after or when you cool down?
- Is it tender to touch at the site of the inside shin?
Shin Pain ranks among the top 5 injuries we encounter at the SA Running Injury Clinic. It is especially prevalent in runners and footballers.
Current research indicates it is caused by the pulling of the muscles along their attachment to the shin bone causing inflammation at the junction of the muscle and bone.
This condition is triggered by:
- Poor foot posture – excessive pronation (rolling inward) leads to more muscle pull on the shin, while excessive supination (rigid foot type) places greater force on the shin bone itself
- Running – especially on hard surfaces (e.g., asphalt roads) or pre-season on hardened grounds
- Sudden increase in running intensity or duration following a period of minimal training
Shin pain can cause serious setbacks in your training, potentially putting you months behind. It’s a troublesome issue that needs immediate treatment once it appears, or even better, prevention.
Often our patients report they are running for a few kilometres or hit half time and they can’t keep going anymore. It is a major issue and will ruin your training plans if you don’t act early.
