Shin Splints Treatment Mile End
Shin Splints Pain (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
- Are you experiencing sharp pain along the inside of your shin?
- Does it intensify while running or playing sports?
- Is there an ache the morning after or when you cool down?
- Does the site on the inner shin feel tender to touch?
At the SA Running Injury Clinic, Shin Pain is in the top 5 most common injuries we see. It is most common in runners and footballers.
Current research indicates it is caused by the pulling of the muscles along their attachment to the shin bone causing inflammation at the junction of the muscle and bone.
The inflammation is caused by:
- Poor foot posture – excessive pronation (rolling inward) results in greater muscle pull against the shin, while excessive supination (rigid foot type) exerts more force on the shin bone
- Running – particularly on hard surfaces like asphalt roads or during pre-season on hardened grounds
- A sudden increase in the intensity or length of runs after limited training
Shin pain can be a significant issue, potentially setting your training back by months. It’s a troublesome condition that requires prompt treatment once it appears, or better yet, prevention.
Often our patients report they are running for a few kilometres or hit half time and they can’t keep going anymore. It is a major issue and will ruin your training plans if you don’t act early.
