Shin Splints Treatment Heathpool
Shin Splints Pain (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
- Do you experience a sharp pain on the inside of the shin?
- Does it intensify while running or playing sports?
- Do you feel an ache the next morning or when you cool down?
- Is there tenderness when you touch the inside of your shin?
Shin Pain ranks among the top 5 injuries we encounter at the SA Running Injury Clinic. It is especially prevalent in runners and footballers.
Recent research points to the pulling of muscles at their attachment to the shin bone as the cause, resulting in inflammation at the muscle and bone junction.
The inflammation is caused by:
- Poor foot posture – excessive pronation (rolling inward) increases muscle pull against the shin, and excessive supination (rigid foot type) applies more force on the shin bone itself
- Running – on hard surfaces (asphalt roads) or pre-season on hardened grounds
- A sudden increase in the intensity or length of runs after limited training
Shin pain can be a serious problem for you and can put you months behind in your training. It’s a nasty condition and one that needs to be treated fast once it presents or ideally prevented in the first place.
Our patients frequently tell us they can only run a few kilometres or reach half time before they have to stop. This is a serious issue that will derail your training plans unless you take action early.
