Shin Splints Treatment Medindie
Shin Splints Pain (Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)
- Are you experiencing sharp pain along the inside of your shin?
- Is the pain aggravated during and/or after a run or sport?
- Ache the following morning or when you cool down?
- Does the site on the inner shin feel tender to touch?
At the SA Running Injury Clinic, Shin Pain is in the top 5 most common injuries we see. It is most common in runners and footballers.
Studies show that the condition results from the muscles pulling on their attachment to the shin bone, causing inflammation where the muscle meets the bone.
This condition is triggered by:
- Poor foot posture – excessive pronation (rolling inward) leads to more muscle pull on the shin, while excessive supination (rigid foot type) places greater force on the shin bone itself
- Running – especially on hard surfaces (e.g., asphalt roads) or pre-season on hardened grounds
- A sudden increase in the intensity or length of runs after limited training
Shin pain can be a serious problem for you and can put you months behind in your training. It’s a nasty condition and one that needs to be treated fast once it presents or ideally prevented in the first place.
Our patients frequently tell us they can only run a few kilometres or reach half time before they have to stop. This is a serious issue that will derail your training plans unless you take action early.
