What is Runner's Knee?
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome or Chondromalacia Patella
- Do you feel knee pain while participating in sport or running activities?
- Do you notice knee discomfort when climbing or descending stairs?
- Do your knees become sore when seated with your legs bent?
Runner’s Knee, also known as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome or Chondromalacia Patella, is a common running-related knee condition assessed at SA Running Injury Clinic. The patella, or kneecap, is a small triangular bone located at the front of the knee joint.
Runner’s Knee can occur when the kneecap does not move smoothly through the knee joint, which may contribute to irritation of nearby tissues and bone structures.
Several contributing factors may be associated with this altered kneecap movement and surrounding irritation, including:
- Weakness in the hip, gluteal, and inner thigh muscle groups
- Reduced flexibility in the outer thigh, hamstrings, and calves
- Flat feet or increased inward foot rolling (pronation)
- A history of lower back or pelvic concerns
- Running shoes that may not adequately support your foot type
- Altered running mechanics
- Excessive loading from hills or stairs
