What is Runner's Knee?
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome or Chondromalacia Patella
- Does your knee become sore during exercise, running, or sport?
- Do your knees feel sore when walking up or down stairs?
- Does sitting for extended periods with bent knees cause aching?
Runner’s Knee, medically known as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome or Chondromalacia Patella, is a common knee presentation among runners and active people. The patella, or kneecap, is a flat triangular bone positioned at the front of the knee.
Runner’s Knee may involve irritation around the kneecap associated with altered movement patterns of the patella. This may contribute to irritation around the surrounding knee structures.
Several contributing factors may be associated with this altered kneecap movement and surrounding irritation, including:
- Limited strength through the hips, buttocks, and inner thigh muscles
- Muscle tightness affecting the outer thigh, hamstrings, and calf region
- Flat feet or increased inward foot rolling (pronation)
- Previous lower back or pelvic injuries
- Inappropriate footwear for your running style or foot mechanics
- Running technique and movement pattern concerns
- Frequent hill running or stair use
