What is Runner's Knee?
Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome or Chondromalacia Patella
- Are you noticing knee discomfort when you run or play sport?
- Does going up or down stairs aggravate your knee pain?
- Do your knees ache when sitting with them bent for long periods?
Runner’s Knee, also known as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome or Chondromalacia Patella, is a common running-related knee condition assessed at SA Running Injury Clinic. The patella, or kneecap, is a small triangular bone located at the front of the knee joint.
Runner’s Knee may involve irritation around the kneecap associated with altered movement patterns of the patella. This may contribute to irritation around the surrounding knee structures.
This altered movement pattern and associated irritation may be influenced by:
- Weakness in the hip, gluteal, and inner thigh muscle groups
- Tightness through the outer thigh, hamstring, and calf muscles
- Flat feet or increased inward foot rolling (pronation)
- Previous lower back or pelvic injuries
- Unsuitable or worn running footwear
- Altered running mechanics
- High volumes of hill or stair training
