Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome or Chondromalacia Patella

- Do you notice knee discomfort while sitting with your knees bent?
Runner’s Knee, medically known as Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome or Chondromalacia Patella, is a common knee presentation among runners and active people. The patella, or kneecap, is a flat triangular bone positioned at the front of the knee.
Runner’s Knee may involve irritation around the kneecap associated with altered movement patterns of the patella. This may contribute to irritation around the surrounding knee structures.
A range of biomechanical and activity-related factors may contribute to these symptoms, including:
- Weakness in the hip, gluteal, and inner thigh muscle groups
- Restricted flexibility in the calf, hamstring, and outer thigh muscles
- Foot posture concerns such as flat feet or excessive rolling inward
- Previous injury involving the lower back or pelvis
- Unsuitable or worn running footwear
- Altered running mechanics
- Frequent hill running or stair use
