Ankle Sprains Bowden
What causes an Ankle Sprain?
- Did you misstep while walking or running and twist your ankle?
- Did you land on someone else's foot while playing basketball, netball, football, or soccer?
- Did you hear a pop or crack?
- Is your ankle stiff and swollen with bruising, causing discomfort when standing or walking?
Ankle sprains are very common at SA Running Injury Clinic .. we encounter them frequently.
As previously noted, ankle sprains are often caused by runners or walkers misjudging a step or landing on an uneven surface. In sports, it commonly results from changing direction or landing on another player's foot.
You might initially struggle with walking or standing, requiring strapping, crutches, or a walking boot. In more severe cases, fractures can occur. Unfortunately, spraining your ankle once can increase the chance of future sprains by 40 – 70%. This may also lead to persistent ankle pain and stiffness, referred to as Sinus Tarsi Syndrome.
We have a 5 Phase Rehabilitation Program:
Phase One:
- Reduce Pain and Control Swelling. This is done via RICER
- Rest

Phase Two:

Phase Three:

Phase Four:

- Ankle sprains can be caused by a foot that ‘rolls out’. The Sinus Tarsi Syndrome Condition can be caused by a foot that ‘rolls in’
Phase Five:
